The Healing Power of Song
≡ Life 2.0
Surfing through YouTube tonight I stumbled upon the first video below. A rapper, Aaron J. Hart, shares his struggle with anxiety on Ireland’s Got Talent. He says that writing and performing has saved him. I immediately thought of the many other moving performances I’ve seen rom around the world on the different talent shows. I’ve assembled here a collection of my favorites.
Being contestants auditioning on a talent show, these artists were unknown at the time these videos were recorded. They were strangers from nowhere. But we quickly came to know them as they shared themselves with a teaching intimacy. Most of these songs deal with loss — a universal experience we all share in time. But they touch also on mental illness, bullying, discrimination and more.
Most songs performed here are also original, making them all the more powerful. But even those who chose to perform known songs revealed themselves through both their selection and their delivery. They made the songs their own.
I invite you to watch and listen as these songs take you on a journey.

A song can infiltrate your heart and the heart may change your mind. – Elvis Costello

Music… will help dissolve your perplexities and purify your character and sensibilities, and in time of care and sorrow, will keep a fountain of joy alive in you. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer
