I’m to the left of Peter Buttigieg. For that matter, I’m to the left of Bernie Sanders. More on this in future posts. But tonight I want to thank ‘Mayor Pete.’
In the late ’60s and early 70s, when I was a scared teenager in the closet, I could never have imagined I would someday be married — legally married! — to another guy. Back then I couldn’t even imagine a relationship of any kind, period.
Fast forward to 2014, I married my love in New York City’s Central Park. Fast forward another eight months and the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage for everyone in June 2015.
The next amazing event has been to witness an openly gay man become a serous contender for nomination by a major party as President of the United States.
It doesn’t matter tonight what differences I have with Mayor Pete as he announced in South Bend that he is suspending his campaign. I just know that the success of his candidacy has meant the world to me. It amazes me the progress I’ve had the privilege to experience in my lifetime.
