Coronavirus: Must-See Daily Briefings

DeWine1

Updated Saturday, March 28, 2020

I can’t recall the last time I praised a Republican — probably ‘cuz I never have! — but Ohio’s Governor Mike DeWine is doing an exemplary job in addressing the Coronavirus crisis.

Most days at 2:00 PM DeWine conducts a press briefing presenting the latest news and updates concerning Coronavirus in general and Ohio’s status specifically. Information is clear, direct, candid, interesting, and very helpful.

Dr. Amy Acton, Director of Health for the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), is wonderful. She gives even Dr. Anthony Fauci a run for his money, and he’s terrific. You’ve no doubt seen him. Dr. Fauci is Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the one bright light each day at the otherwise counter-productive White White briefings. He’s seemingly inexhaustible as he makes the rounds to all the national interview shows.

These daily press briefings are not brief! But they are worth every minute. Following below are the verbatim briefings starting with Sunday, March 15 when DeWine ordered closure of all bars and restaurants in Ohio. Other states quickly followed suit.

DeWine called out Cleveland cops for their carnage; cleared all their languishing rape kits; nowndealing with Corona. 👍

DeWine is definitely interesting! He’s an opponent of abortion rights, fought same-sex marriage all the way to the Supreme Court, and appears to support Right to Work. Then once elected governor, though, he turned around and immediately issued an order banning discrimination against state employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

He’s been especially good in the current crisis where his statements and actions stand in stark contrast to Washington under Trump. It’s difficult, though, because actions he’s taking are hurting many workers including some friends — but regrettably I don’t see where there’s any choice right now but to do things such as closing bars and restaurants. People’s lives are at stake in this pandemic if we carry on normally. What should happen, of course, is that workers be held completely harmless financially during this social crisis. It’s not DeWine’s fault exactly, not personally, but protecting workers is not what we do in capitalist society.
